Short description:

The objective of this course is to provide a basic overview of antennas designed and fabricated by  RF-MEMS technology. The course will cover following topics: brief overview of MEMS technology, its advantages, limitations; basic principles and techniques for the design of RF-MEMS based antennas; MEMS switch as a basic element for RF-MEMS antennas and arrays; applications such as micromachined antennas, reconfigurable antennas (frequency tunable, multiband, polarization and pattern reconfigurable antennas), phased arrays, reflectarrays; biasing techniques, brief discussion of reliability, power handling and packaging issues. This course includes modeling, fabrication techniques and measurements of RF-MEMS antennas. In addition to lectures, design-simulation studies and some measurements of RF-MEMS antennas can be performed. The important fabrication steps will be demonstrated.  The simulation tools will be supported by Ansoft. Fabrication demonstrations will be supported  by METU-MEMS Center. Detailed course program is given below.

Course schedule: 35 hours (22 hours lectures, 6 hours design/simulation exercises, 3 hours measurements, 4 hours clean room-fabrication)

Credits: the course gives 3 ECTS credits

Availability: 25 students

Prerequisites: Electromagnetics and basic antenna knowledge

How to reach:

The easiest way to reach Ankara is by plane. Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa (via Munich) have several regular flights to Ankara. Since the course will be held in summer time, you may find cheaper charter flights to some famous tourist destinations in Turkey (Antalya, İzmir, Bodrum, Dalaman...). Then you can take a bus to Ankara, which may take 7 to 11 hours depending on your initial location and it may cost at most 30-40 euros.

The airport (Esenboga) is 30 km from the city centre. You can take a taxi-cab (it may cost around 40-50 euros), or a regular shuttle bus (Havas, it costs app. 5 Euros, but that would take you to the main bus station, then you have to take a taxi that it may cost 10 euro), or city-bus  (it costs app. 2.5 Euros, but that would take you to the city center, then you may take a bus (costs 1.5 euro) or a taxi (costs 10 euro)) or if you send us your travel information we may arrange private shuttle that would take you to your final destination (it costs app.20 euro).

Accommodation:
Accommodation is not included in the course fee. The organizers can arrange rooms in the university dormitories and the university guest house. Single room with a bathroom costs 45 TL/day. Please send your arrival and departure dates to ozlem@metu.edu.tr for the reservation. The deadline of applying for an accommodation is Saturday, June 12, 2010.
